User Guide to Upping your Hashtag Game

Hashtags are not new to the world of social media. In fact, odds are you have tried using hashtags in previous posts. That’s great! There are a few things to keep in mind when using hashtags.

Hashtag guide:

·        Research your hashtags before use to see if they align with your brand image.

·        Research which Hashtags your competitors use.

·        Make them easy to spell and remember (when creating your own).

·        Use brand specific or industry specific hashtags consistently (#Independentgardencenter).

·        Identify if your industry has a niche hashtag (#isitcake).

·        Location might help show your content to a certain geographic area (#Tetonvalley).

#TransformationTuesday).

What is the purpose of hashtags?

Hashtags help social media algorithms categorize your content. On Instagram, hashtags help sort and show your content to appropriate users, they also allow users to search posts containing that hashtag. Instagram allows users to follow hashtags, so they stay current on posts and trends within that category. Facebook utilizes hashtags like Instagram, but you need to be a lot more careful during implementation. General guidelines are only use 1 or 2 hashtags, more than 2 hashtags and your content reach declines. Make sure to use industry specific or targeted hashtags. Finally, be sure your audience knows what a hashtag is and how to use them.

Why should I research my hashtags?

The best-case scenario when you use a hashtag you haven’t researched, is your content being shown to the wrong audience. The worst-case scenario is your business is being cancelled because you utilized the wrong hashtag.  You want to make sure that the hashtags you use reflects your business. An example of utilizing the wrong hashtag is below. Although funny the odds are the bakery will show up on finance communities and not bakeries. We all know finance Bros probably don’t start their day with fresh handmade bread.

Grow your social media following through hashtags.

Hashtags are an easy way to grow your social media following, helping to show your content to interested users.

·        To discover what hashtags you should utilize look at the hashtags your audience is

already using or following.

·        Using generic hashtags doesn’t help grow your audience. Instead use hashtags tailored

to your Target audience.

·        Hashtags should be shown a line below your caption (see graphic above if you are

confused).

·        Use local hashtags to create community awareness.
